Emma’s Presentation at The ICare4Autism Conference

Emma's Hope Book

Emma came up with the title of yesterday’s presentation – My Body Does Not Obey My Mind.  In preparation for our talk, Emma wrote, “how about discussing gleeful shouts and irreverent clapping as expressions of joy, but that many will see as indications of simple mindedness?”  I told her I thought this was a great idea.

During our presentation Emma found a number of people in the audience who happily engaged in making faces with her. One of her favorite faces is one she refers to as “fish lips”.   She proceeded to demonstrate “fish lips” and then, after successfully encouraging others to participate, she typed, “Doing fish lips to the audience is an expression of funny playfulness, but can be misinterpreted as simple mindedness.  Silliness is acceptable in those who are believed smart, but for those like me, it indicates stupidity.”  It was a powerful demonstration of yet another…

ISIS’ Caliphate and Christ’s Kingdom of God

Progressive Culture | Scholars & Rogues

Were Christ and his followers early jihadists?

In the end, martyrdom on the cross was a lot more effective than martyrdom by suicide bombing. (Photo: Random House) In the end, martyrdom on the cross was a lot more effective than martyrdom by suicide bombing. (Photo: Random House)

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham recently announced the formation of a new caliphate — or empire, if you will — comprising the existing states in the Muslim world. Its leader, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, will act as the caliph — or emperor, if you will.I’m currently reading Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan (Random House, 2013) and it occurs to me that ISIS’ announcement is not unlike Jesus Christ proclaiming the Kingdom of God with, like al Baghdadi, himself as the king.

Sunset over Lake Michigan

The (Semi-Regular) Roaming Lama

We are heading off to Michigan tomorrow afternoon to enjoy the fourth of July weekend. I took this photo last summer but finally got around to working on it. I was standing on top of one of the dunes overlooking Lake Michigan while the sun set on a perfect summer day. I thought the beach grass would make an interesting element in the foreground while still minimizing the rather boring and cloudless sky. I added a hint of texture (Antique Paper) to the sky to give it a little bit of interest because in general I think skies without any texture tend to be rather ‘blah’ (technical term?).

【TBT】Tokyo’s Pico Pico Cafe: Where video games meet coffee

SoraNews24 -Japan News-

P1050584

Despite having visited the town of Kichijoji in Tokyo on a near daily basis for over a year, it wasn’t until I sat down with video game developer James Kay and started chatting about our mutual love of pixels and coffee that I learned about Pico Pico Cafe, a cosy corner perched at the top of a eight-storey building just minutes from Kichijoji station.

After dropping the staff a line, RocketNews24 headed over for a coffee and a chat. We hadn’t gone two steps inside, however, before we found ourselves completely enamoured with the unique cafe’s warm, homely interior and – perhaps most of all for this life-long gamer – the subtle dashes of video game culture in every other nook and cranny.

Tons of cool photos after the jump.
